Brownsville, Texas herps..

RioBravoReptiles Mar 30, 2008 02:14 PM

.. today I walked up a nice pair of adult atrox..
.

.
They were sitting in ambush beside a ratnest.
.
I photographed this pretty kid yesterday..
.

.
The dry conditions make for tough herping! ... plus there's a war on nature going on here.. probably in another year it will be impossible to see stuff like this in or near to Brownsville.. and all these animals will have been dug up, scraped off into a dump-truck and burned or buried at the landfill.
.
Yeah, it bums me out!

You and me both Gus. Nice sub adult indie. I haven't seen "my" indies this month, there is road construction going on above them.

Today, about 200 yards from where I was photographing the atrox there was a large indigo snake smashed to nothing on the edge of the road over a ditch by a construction project..
.

.
.. that's not it, I photographed that one a couple of weeks ago by ANOTHER canal project. It's sickening.. Lots of guys come to south Texas and see an indigo snake or a few atrox and then leave 'been there, done that'.. they have done zip.. to learn to know the animals and watch them over the years and how they use the habitat.. it's an entirely different level of herping..
.
... look at the size of the scales on this big diamondback.. like dragon scales!
.

.
I love those big old snakes..
.
Bye, Bye, friends. Many will not mourn you or even know you were there. I will.

So in essence, we will be splitting the natural range in two, with a northern and a southern population. yes until one has had more than a few close encounters with the truly big three down here, they ain't been there yet. My only solace is that there are still a few big places between you and me that can hold big snakes. I hope this is the year to see the speckled racer for me, before I have to go across the border even further.
