Eggs and car rides

wolsniw Mar 30, 2008 06:40 PM

Hello, I have a female that has ovulated and I expect her to lay soon. As luck would have it, I will have to leave the country while the eggs are incubating and am planning on taking the eggs to a friends house to incubate which is about 1 and 1/2 hours away. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience transporting eggs in a car. I am not to worried about the temperatures (as I don't mind sitting in an 87 degree car for an hour), but its the bumpy freeways in CA that I am worried about. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ante

I know my friend Bob Wisehart did after he lost power to his incubator after a hurricane. He transported all the eggs to a friend's house and incubated them in a hovabator. They all hatched. Yours should be fine as long as you take care not to have too much of a temp. change and they don't get damaged.

A few years back I was going to visit family and friends in Texas and my clutch of Tanimbar python eggs was still cooking. Before I left I built a cooler incubator and plugged in the helix "basic" (DBS does not work) system to a power inverter and off we went. I put the Nauta eggs in VPIs incubator when I got there and they all hatched a few days latter. I would not worry to much about the bumpy road as mother pythons twitch pretty hard around the clutch when they cook them. I would be most worried about temps. The trip was over 2,000 miles down from N Idaho.
