At 6" a trained eye can differentiate about 90% leaving 10% to be probable male or probable female.
Thanks,
Is that by useing the width of the base of the tail? Or will the males heads be large enough to tell the difference by then?
-Blue
head width and tail thickness is not a good way to tell sexes..as some males have narrow heads than others..and tail thickness at the base is more due to fatty deposits than anything.
Best way to sex bearded dragons is the presence of a single bulge or two bulges on the tail side of the vent, when the dragon is sitting on a flat surface, facing away from you, and you lift the tail up about 90 degrees.

I've always been able to tell once they're a few months old. That sounds just right what Blvdr said...
When you know what the bumps look like and what to look for you can make pretty dead-on judgements. the 3 males i bred and kept i could tell when they were very little that they were BOYS!!

ps. isn't it hilarious when the beardie's come outta their eggs and some are EXHAUSTED.. and then they're PISSED!!? There's always 1 REALLY angry one who bites and attaches himself to your fingertip- like "WHERE am I? WTF I'll threaten you with my impressive GAPE!!" it's SOOO funny!! Defense mode!! ah ha ha.. can't wait to have more babies... I'm gonna have to take pictures of them when they do that..

Ha! Mine all hatched at different times but I do have two punks right now who think they are tough guys! My female lays on top of my males head when they are together so now my wife thinks all the babies who do that to their siblings are females.
The babies all have great personalities and I can tell who is who just by the way they act. I have one that was born with a spinal deformity and he is the only one that comes up to me when it's feeding time. He always gets fed first and was the first to eat greens.
