More breeding questions from the newbie

cm_reptiles Mar 31, 2008 01:07 PM

I think most my girls will be ready by nov. Most are 05's and 03's that were grown up really slow and of coarse my males are more then ready. My breeding room is the living room and I kept a very quiet scarlet macaw and a alligator in there should they be a problem in the snake room? Also I keep eyeballing some 06 girls could those be paired up in nov as well? I have some spare males that are needing some girls. Also caging questions.. I am using boaphiles and northwest constrictor caging right now but how do people feel about the retiracks? I really like the design on them and also the ars caging that has been commented on as the best by several breeders. Any comments?

I also have used and am using the Proline from Constrictors Northwest as well as Boaphiles. I prefer the Proline due to material strength and ease of cleaning. The ARS racks look very nice, but are probably best used in a climate controlled room. I'm not sure that they'd be great for a room that is say 70 degrees.

As for breeding '06s, generally you should wait another year. But more specifically what kind of boas are they? Some Central American imperator locales can breed younger, for example the Panamanian litter we had last week, 22 babies from a 5' female, no stills or slugs, was from an '05 pair. If the '06 females are Colombians there is absolutely no way they can safely be bred that young and I'd already venture to say that there may be issues if they are even that large at such a young age. While some boas do grow rather fast, most '06 females should be rather small. I only have one female I am raising from '06, a Sharp Albino, she is under 4' and eats weanling rats.

Good comment Chris about the "ARS" caging.I hadn't thought about it much, boaphiles are my cages to go with. The ARS caging does look great but the tubs and system probably wouldn't do as well in a lower temp environment.Always something to think about.

I am not sure how the ABS works in the larger bins. But I know that the PP used for the smaller bins (CB-70 and baby rack) are thicker than other companies' tubs. This means that the flexwatt heat panels have to be set to a higher temp to achieve the same basking spot. So you do need good thermostats, cheap-o doesn't work here.

Different materials insulate differently. Most cages need to be in a room that is slightly warmer than room temp to achieve the ideal temp gradients. Solid side racks made from PVC or HDPE and using flexwatt are really the only thing I would feel 100% comfortable with in a room of 70 degrees. With my new AP cages, and their economy racks (open sides) I have had to heat my room to 75 to keep the right gradients.
