seven foot grandaddy Stillwater hypo

ginter Mar 31, 2008 06:55 PM

Thought I would share a pic of my monster Stillwater hypo. He is literally the grandfather to all Stillwaters out there. He and his somewhat smaller sister founded the Stillwater line. They are getting up there in years but still eating and breeding like youngsters. The lighting was bad, I was in a hurry, and I had to lower the size and quality of the image to load it up so I apologize for the poor quality in advance.

I hope you're pampering him-we bull keepers owe him a debt! Awesome animal, looks a lot like my female.

That is a beautiful snake, and a 7 footer too (sign him for the Lakers, both of their 7 footers are injured). How long have you had him, and his sister?

I would have to go back into my records for an exact year but if memory serves I think it must have gotten the pair as hatchlings in....95 or 96. The year before, I visited a guy by the name of Adam Marty in Missouri who showed me his rattlesnake round up pair of bulls and their funky looking hatchling, forever known as the "Stillwater hypo" I had him put me down for a pair of the next years hatclings on the spot!

I lost track of Adam over the years and I think he may have gotten out of herps but was an enthusiastic lover of Pits. Great minds think alike. I think he called his business "House of Pituophis" or something like that. He is a dead ringer for that actor Phillip Seymore Hoffman, or at least was.

I have noticed that the Stillwater hypos I have seen/handled are more docile than the average Pit and I was wondering if:
A) it is an aberration among the few animals I have seen
or
B) This is a common trait among this line
Were the F1 Stillwaters relatively placid?

Beautiful animal btw

ginter Apr 01, 2008 07:37 PM

The Stillwaters I have are all relatively docile as are many of the Kingsville Texas red bulls, Carbon Co Montana dwarf bulls, and many other bulls I have encountered even in the wild. Some of my Kankakees can be really hissy but in general I have always had the impression that bulls are fairy mellow when you get past the initial bluffing and showmanship........I have encountered exceptions of course. There are probably inheritable defensive tendencies with a range of docility among populations and individuals. Would be a great study.

Generally when picked up most pits abandon the well known displays and go with the flow.

How many hypo stillwater bulls do you holdback?? I'd imagine it's hard to part with some each & every year. I picture your herp room wall to wall with hypo stillwaters....lol.

Very beautiful snake. For some reason I have never acquired one but I hope this year to get a pair. I emailed you about getting some this past year but I think you only had males left. In fact, this past year, there seemed to be many breeders heavy on males.
