Several of you were very helpful when I took this guy in from a neglectful situation a few months back. He's become quite a hit around here and I'm planning to pair him up next year. He's my first venture into milksnakes and I'd like to find a comparable female. Would I call this a bicolor or tricolor? And is he tangerine or hypo tangerine? Best guesses are appreciated! I'm not too worried about it, he's the brightest snake in my house whatever he's called, but I'd like to be informed. Thanks for the helpful discussions! Adam

Very nice!,.....that's a good looking normal "tangerine" Honduran. They tend to have some black "tipping" on the scales, whereas hypos generally have VERY little, to ZERO tipping, VERY clean coloration, and even drastically reduced black banding, etc... depending on several genetic factors.

In any case, that classifies as a nice looking, normal "tangerine" Honduran.

normal "tangerine"

aberrant hypo(dark bands, but clean, no "tipping"

and two versions of "extreme" hypo(zero tipping, clean vivid coloration, light, silvery/gray bands, "deep "ruby-red" eyes.

I agree with Doug. Your snake would be considered a normal tangerine honduran. Since the bands (orange and orange) are about the same color, your snake could be called a bicolor. A tricolor indicates a more typical triangulum pattern of red, black, and white/yellow. Nate Wells posted a fantastic example of tricolor honduran a few posts below.

Hope this helps.

and thanks Doug for the awesome pics ... they're illustrating, to say the very least! Are they part of your collection?
