get them to jump like that?? or once they grab the mouse do you just lift them up.Just wondering. Thats too funny.

All I have to do is hold the food there.

I know with the peachies, if you make them tug on the mice, it is a sure way to make them disembowel the mice and make a big mess. So I avoid doing that...

My BRNs have gotten to where they disembowel occasionally. Probably just for the heck of it. Messy little buggers but man it's fun living with them.

Only they know for sure why they do what they do. However I often wonder if dumerils do this as in the wild they live near rivers and feed on alot of crabs. When I offer fiddler crabs they go nuts and rip the claws off before eating. Maybe they think mice have pinchers too? Or it is a quick easy way to kill there prey.

Who knows for sure I cannot speak there language or I'd ask them.

I have to agree w/ Jody P. on the dumeril's evisceration thing. Each & every dumerils I've ever had shreded their food. It works well for the crayfish but w/ mice & chicks it makes a mess.
The argus will learn to wait for you to open the door & grab whatever comes in.

I have no idea.. a friend of mine built it for me. Ill talk to him about it and find out where he got it. You can e mail me if you want. what i do know about it is that it is a type of plastic(go figure). Itwas desinged very simply the top, botton sides and back are screwd into a frame.

But whats neat about it is that it has a chamber system.the point of it is to channel air around the cage and heat it up more and hold warm air in. if it works or not i do not know but it sure looks cool, and it holds my temps good so im happy. Ill take some pics of the chamber part and see if i can find some pics of it when it was being built.Hope that helped.

Unfortunately he has figured out that the mice on the tongs come from me some how. It is pretty sobering to see a 5 foot lizard charging you. I can totally relate to the Jefe / George situation.

Great pics as always Robert, thanks.

The thrashing of the chick!

Gene May 23, 2003 07:55 AM

Can you not post them like you used to using the html?

RobertBushner May 23, 2003 09:06 AM

I would need some longer tongs. hahahaha

I do think the argus will get very interesting when they are bigger, much less a five foot water. So I guess I'm saying... no thanks!

The really exciting part is they do not always aim for the mouse.

GREAT PICS GUYS. about their aim, i recently had a unnerving experience as my 5 foot water leaped from a log, up on to the door frame to grab a rat off the tongs. i didnt expect this 20 pound lizard to be able to launch itself that far, much as a cat would. well, she missed the rat and grabbed the tongs mid way up, close to my fingers. i let go and she must have realized metal tongs arent tasty so she released and dove back in for the rat. what i was trying to do was get a picture of her catching the rat as i threw it in but i was slow on the pitch lol.
my sister will not participate any more in my photo quest.
her aim this time was poor, but were talking about a 5 foot lizard that can still snatch up crickets. or pinpoint minute food morsels on the substrate and bolt it down. i think she over shot the rat due to her mass and speed, not poor eyesight. she simply missed and it almost cost me. just be careful gene, yours can do severe damage at that size. just ask DK or the many others. -john a

RobertBushner May 24, 2003 12:42 AM
