He's a bit cranky when I first get in his enclosure. That's quite normal I'd imagine as that's his "territory" I'm invading. Once he's out he's perfectly calm. I have a 4 year old girl who can't get enough of him and he doesn't seem to mind her constant petting. He just ignores us and goes about his exploration of my house. Sometimes our shadows will cause a defense reaction and/or a tail whip, but they seem to just be low speed attempts to let us know it's there.
I can hand feed him, but I use tongs so he's never confused about what my hand is. He has never bitten or even tried to bite. He's very gentile.
Lately I've been experimenting with behavior based on certain changes. He's been completely raised on f/t rodents, eggs, etc. Nothing live...ever. Starting a week ago I introduced live chicks to him to see if it created a more aggressive behavior during feeding, after feeding, or when handling. And to get his general reaction to them. It's only been a week, and so far no changes in behavior at all, but I think he quite enjoys the chase. Some of those chicks can give him a good workout.
I do notice a big difference in behavior between constant interaction and infrequent interaction. When I spend less time with him he gets a little more defensive, and irritable. The more time I spend around him he tends to be a lot more calm and careless of my presence and handling of him.
I also have a good size Savannah Monitor, a baby black throat (CBB), a redtail boa and pastel ball python. I'm looking to add a white throat to my collection.
