genotype is the genetic description of the snake.
phenotype is the expressed genetics of the snake.

Example -

Snake A - het amel
Snake B - homo amel
Snake C - het charcoal
Snake D - homo charcoal
Snake E - het amel het charcoal
Snake F - amel het charcoal
Snake G - charcoal het amel
Snake H - homo amel homo charcoal

The above indicates info about their genotype. Here are the phenotypes:

Snake A - normal
Snake B - amel
Snake C - normal
Snake D - charcoal
Snake E - normal
Snake F - amel
Snake G - charcoal
Snake H - Blizzard

Basically - genotype is genetic description of the gene pairs and phenotype is what it looks like.

It's actually a little more complicated than that -

Reverse Okeetee and Sunglow are two different phenotypes but both are describes as homo amel genotype. Both are amel phenotype but Reverse Okeetee and Sunglow would be more specific phenotype.

There actually are differences in their genotype - but it is very complex and we don't have simple genotype descriptions that can differentiate them.

Mate a normal corn to an amel-all the babies will LOOK normal (their "phenotype" but will be carrying the gene for amel-be "heterozygous" for the amel gene (their "genotype" at that locus)...

genotype = the gene combination, what genes they have. Genotypes are written with capital letters for dominant genes, and lower case letters for recessive genes.

phenotype = the actual physical appearnce of the animal

example:

A normal corn snake might have the genotype "NN". That same snake's phenotype would be its physical appearance as a normally colored corn snake.

The phenotype is the outward appearance of an organism and results from the interaction of the genotype and the environment. The genotype is genetic constitution of the organism.

PS - I second the God bless evolution, Beaker. I think we've had discussions about that before...
