Hog Scenting techniques!!

sepultura4ever Aug 29, 2003 10:06 AM

Hey Guys,

There are a total of 30 Eastern hogs that we need to get eating scented pinks and about 10 or so that have taken pinks over a 4 wk period. I am just wondering what methods of scenting pinks you guys use so I can have more ways of scenting. I usually use the blender/FT toad methoad and soaking a pink in the mixture. This has proved successful for some of the hogs but not all of them. I have also tryed cutting off some toad skin and placing a samll amount on the pinks head. I have heard of toad urine, does this work ?
Thanks for any help........Scott Wahlberg

I hope these are all captive bred, and not adults ripped out of the wild!

As I said in the past, is not necessary to kill a toad in order to use it for scenting. The best scenting method I found that works the most consistently is to get a captive toad to bite on to the pinkie. For some reason, the saliva works better than any other method. Although I have had very good success with using shed skin.

Keeping live toads available for scenting also allows you to use the bait and switch method, described in a few posts below.

Thanks for the help. I have been collecting fresh dor bufo valliceps and freezing them. I guess i'll try setting up a terrarium. one of the adults that layed the eggs i collected in a field about 4 months ago,it is now a neighborhood. The majority will most likely be released b/c it really is to much of a hassle to scent 30 pinks ever few day........Scott Wahlberg

hi Scott, i have had the best success with freezing pinks in the mixture and then thawing the baggie in warm water. it has worked for all my southerns and easterns in the transition to unscented pinks. also long thin tongs to manipulate the pink in a small hopping or jerking motion diagonal to the snake's head but never towards its face, they freek when it comes right at them.
