pine is ok, you just have to seal it. read the the cage building forum, there is a ton of info there.

Most of the pine wood that you get is kiln dried unless you are getting it from a sawmill. Even then although most of it tends to be green these days sometimes you can get seasoned wood where the oils have dried. That said although my monitor cages are always sealed I have used regular pine for other cages where the wood was not sealed and have not had any problems. Given the nature of monitor cages and the humidity requirements you would want to seal the cage to make it last longer.
