She's Afraid

HerpLover95 Apr 02, 2008 07:36 PM

This is an update on my 3 year old amel corn. When I last posted here you guys told me to keep you updated. My problem was her eating. Since Oct. she's been a very picky feeder and has had about 5 meals. Over the past 3 weeks she's eaten. Yesterday though, she did not. I have come to the conclusion that she's afraid. When I introduce a mouse she quickly panicks and tries to burrow in the aspen. She's on F/T prey and I've not done anything different in any of my feedings. She's constantly acting afraid. This has been a constant observation durring feeding her. I've tried to the best of my ability to come up with a conclusion. I know it may sound crazy but this really seems like the problem. I have my 2nd attempted feeding on video from last night. In it she always tries to escape from the opened cage when I wiggle the mouse. I tried to feed her again tonight and she seems horrified. What can I do to help her get over this? Will Sat. and Mon. handlings help her forget about this?

it sounds like shes in a big house and shes scared... try putting her and the pinky into a lil deli cup or critter carrier cover with a sheet or blanket and leave for about an hour or even overnight. try that and see if that helps...also, how big is the tank?? a ten gallon should be the largest for a baby snake.

She's a 3 ft 3 year old corn in a 3 ft long cage with 3 hides. I've tried the container trick more than 3 times. She just tries to get out the whole time.

I always put the snakes in a separate small feeding container and leave the ones that don't eat alone in the dark with their mouse for a little while, usually when I come back in there is no mouse. One wild caught didn't want to eat, so I would put him in his feeding cup then put the cup under his hide in his cage and turn out the lights, he doesn't even require the lights out anymore.

Also, I don't feed them in the aspen, they might swallow some had have some severe problems.

Good luck.

Leave the mouse in the cage with the snke overnight. Do not bother, watch, observe, handle, videotape, etc. the snake. Snales crave security and are especially vulnerable when feeding.

Also, how long has the snake been in a three-foot cage? Snakes often feed better when kept in smaller enclosures.

She's been in there for 2 years. I will try again tom. night. I'll combine all you guys suggestions with Kathy Love's. Thank you all very much. Also, there is no need to worry about her injesting aspen. I've fed her with a paper towel under her since she's been with me. Again, thank you all very much! You're always a help!
