Dogs and snakes?

j3nnay Apr 02, 2008 08:14 PM

I've been keeping a large female boa at my house for a little while, and our dogs have definately had their doubts about the wisdom of this decision. Today I had her out to get some exercise, and while I had her on the floor I noticed the looks a couple of the dogs were giving her...and I just had to take some pictures.

The one on the floor on the left is Watson, the one peeking behind the chair is Merlot.

Little Merlot never took her eyes off that snake. Since she weighs 140 lbs I really doubt she had much to worry about...but she sure wasn't taking my word for it!

Thought I'd share.

Yeah, I meant 140 pounds. Merlot is the smaller of the two big dogs - Watson, the one on the floor, was 170 when he last went to the vet, but he's been on a diet and likely weighs less now.

They are Great Danes. Lazy, affectionate, and very, very large.

Me and Watson last year (he likes to sit in my lap...or at least try) -

Your dogs are smart. Natural enemies in nature. The literature cites dog as one of wild boas favorite foods.

But these are Great Danes - there's no wild BCI in Germany!

that's cute! My dog (I don't have her anymore, ex got her when we split) was the same way! She (pit bull) was terified of my snakes, even just the shed skin. She'd give it the evil eye, back away with head cocked to the side and give me a real worried look. One time, I had just moved babies into temporary tubs and must not have closed one of the lids all the way, I heard a frantic barking, looked down the hall and the dog was running backwards barking like crazy. She had come across the escapee. I had never seen her so frightened!
Thanks for sharing and bringing back a funny memory of my own.

Your dog just looks curious. my cat however is out for blood! this one figured out how to pull tubs out of my racks so now she gets locked in my living room while i'm at work

The dogs are pretty perplexed by the snake, and they are especially freaked out by the little snakes. They will sit and stare for hours, backing up and barking if you attempt to put the snake closer to them.

I wish I had been able to get a better picture of Merlot's face. That dog gets worry wrinkles worse than any human I know, lol.

My mom's dog (brittany spaniel) doesn't pay my boas any attention at all. they might as well not be there...

But, when i had a cat (ex got her... grrrr...), the cat thought they were toys! she would try to bat their tails, and would sit and watch them in their cages, and sometimes paw the plexi...

and she liked to sleep on top of one of the racks, nice and warm up there!
