Cleaning question

Cyn Apr 02, 2008 10:14 PM

How do you guys clean your baby boas and the cage after the female delivers? Does the goo just dry up when they are moving around or is there a cleaning process you go through? What about the cage? Any cleaning tips for the after birth? Sorry if these are new questions but I'm expecting my first litter soon and although extremely stressed out, I would like to be somewhat prepared. Thanks in advance.

First thing is to remove the female - And she will be pissed, and likely striking. I throw a towel over her and then hold her behind her head to remove her. Some people wait until the babies are crawling around before messing with them. I put a few towels in a tub or two depending on the size of the litter. I heavily spray the towels with warm water and gently transfer the babies to the tub(s). when they crawl around on the damp towels they start to get clean. I change these towels twice a day for 3 days, always slightly damp. By the third day, most if not all of the goo is cleaned off. I still keep the tub with towels moister that normal until they shed. Completely clean your cage.
One thing that I suggest, is to hold them as little as possible until they've shed and eaten. Often people with their first litter will want to get them out too soon because they're so excited, and it usually takes longer to get them to eat (stress).
Your female will seem like a different snake for awhile - always acting hungry and aggresive for weeks. Start her out on a little smaller than normal meal - their stomach has shrunk, and shouldn't be immediately stretched to the max right away.
