Wandering Garter Questions

vulcan Apr 03, 2008 01:55 AM

I was thinking about getting a melanistic wandering when everyone has hatchlings to sell, but I've been reading mixed opinions about keeping them with cagemates. I'd like to put it in with my Puget Sound, so could someone please let me know if wanderings are known to eat their cagemates like some species of kingsnake do? Thanks!

Wanderings are known to be canabelistic. Some will eat anything small enough to swallow (baby birds, mice, and even smaller snakes) so I would keep the snakes in seperate enclosures to be safe.

Good choice for your next garter, melanistic wanderings are awesome!

Jeff, hows that red water snake doing for you?

A friend of mine was collecting a few Montana snakes for a presentation he was doing at his kids school last year, and the first two that he caught were a baby racer, and a well started baby wandering that he unfortunetly put in the same container and set it down to look for more snakes. When he went back to the container to add a third snake (a plains garter) he found that he only had one snake in it, a very fat wandering garter. That poor little racer got eaten. He let the wandering go right there, and put the rest of the snakes he caught that day to take to the school in seperate containers.

I've been addicted to the melanistic phase for some time now, but I couln't decide between a melanistic eastern or wandering. I think it will be safer to go with the eastern because I do want to put it with my other garter. I'll just have to track down an eastern with really reduced white!

it has been known to happen, but is very rare...I have had wanderings for years and never saw this happen.

So you have kept them together with no problems? I was wondering if it was more of a rumor with a few accounts to back it up, because any snake would and could eat another under the right circumstances. Then there are those species such as Cali kings where you can't take your eyes off them even when breeding!
