I Never! Well, I used to be able to ...

gypsy1dragon Apr 03, 2008 03:16 AM

I used to be able to say, I never had a snake escape. Then ... a couple of months ago, when we went to feed everybody, my son's favorite (Sunny, the brightest amel you ever saw) was not there! We looked everywhere, my son punched a few things and left the house so angry I was worried about him. But I have never been known to give up and looked in the one place you would never think she would be, under the stinky carpet under the cat litter box, and low and behold she was there! The greatest relief, we wanted to breed her this year.

Went to feed everybody Monday, and Sunny's mate Goku the anery was not there. I swear I had just seen him in his cage a few hours before that. Well no luck so far and it is Wednesday. The poor cats have been locked in a bathroom my son thinks he has made sure Goku could not be there, even put a towel under the door.

I've seen many posts in the past years about different ways to find them. Flour on the floor, etc. I saw at one time that some people use the glue traps, but I would be afraid I would never get him free. Any such thing as a snake trap?

Sorry for the long post, but you know, these are like our children and we are broken hearted until we find him. I don't think one of the cats got him, because they have always left their kills as presents for me.

Thanks for your help.

i used plastic soda bottles.... cut the part off the top that starts getting smaller and turn the "siphon" inside out and tape it back together. put a mouse or pinky inside... and its worked before...

Thanks, I'll give that a try. Unfortunately, I think he very well could have gotten out of the room, but I might put a few of these traps around up against the wall. Good idea. Thank you again.

I would seriously consider tightening up the cage security issue ASAP, the lid security doesnt sound like it has such a good track record here. After the first missing snake, did you find out how it got out?, and the second time, did you find out how it got out?,.....I see a definite pattern here.

If it really WAS secure, is your son very young, and getting the snake out, then not securing things, or your sons friends, or whatever, I know I wouldn't have my animals escaping all the time.

Hope you find it this time,...just keep in mind, this can be prevented.

best regards, ~Doug

We never had an escapee in the 3 years we've had them. The first escape was from an aquarium with the screen top and the black clips. Apparently the clips were not centered and she was able to push her way out. The second one, I have not figured out yet how he got out. Very large plastic tub with secure lid with heavy objects over both ends and middle. I still keep searching in his cage when I look for him. No one had had him out of his cage since I had last seen him in there. And no, if he is found, he will not be housed the same way.

The clips that hold screen lids on are worthless IMHO. I've had escapes from them too many times.

Plastic tubs with lids should be in a rack - so that the shelf above puts even pressure on the lid. With just a weight on the lid - there may be parts of the lid that the snake can slightly bend.

I had a cal king that managed to get out of a sterilite tub with a weight on it - I found it, but it had some pretty nasty scrape wounds. Fortunately the wounds healed.

Double checking the cage brings back memories. I had my first "escape" the second year I was keeping corns. I turned the house upside down, made traps, did the flour and nothing. Finally after about a week I was moving items in the cage and picked up an artificial branch I was using at the time and noticed a hole...and a little head poked out! The branch was intended for use in an aquarium so it was hollow and my sneaky corn found the hole and slid right in. She was in the cage the whole time! My wife still won't let me forget that one.

I wish that was the case here. Now I have found out just how smart this sneakly lil cuss is. I did the mouse in the soda bottle trick. I checked on it frequently. Last time I checked, now mouse, no snake either. And it was a dead mouse, I tried it alive, went out to the living room, sat down, looked around and there ran the mouse, lol.

The good thing is, I know the snake is alive. Unfortunately I have found evidence of him in the kitchen also, so he has found a way back and forth, even though I kept a towel under the door.
