genetics question

cochran Apr 03, 2008 09:51 AM

This is probably a silly question for genetics gurus but,I bred my female ghost to my amel. bloodred who is het. hypo. Will the offspring have the bloodred pattern at all? Thanks in advance! Jeff

Bloodred seems to be a little different from the other morphs in that the babies will carry the bloodred gene (het for bloodred) but may also exhibit SOME of the bloodreds traits as well.
It's not unusual to see "het" bloodred hatchlings display the "bloodred type head", a greyish color with no spear point and maybe reduced belly checkering as well.

I know Don has talked about that inconsistency in the past. Do you know if anyone has looked into whether or not this might be a case of incomplete dominance?

Sean.

It kind of sounds like it could be CLOSE to co-dominance. This may be a bad example but the pastel ball pythons are kind of similar in that when you breed a pastel to a normal you get some pastels but when you breed 2 pastels together you get all babies that are VERY pastel (a different looking animal)...if that makes since.

not dominant nor recessive

yes the kids may have reduced pattern and may have a more red color to them

Thanks Ralph!,The reason I asked is,I've seen some of the bloodred hets. that looked to me like they had the lack of a pattern on the sides and the head as you mentioned. Jeff
