Dan,
That shot could easily be seen on the pages of National Geographic! Good job.

That's an awesome picture!!
I was actually going to make a new black milk thread but I'll just ask here.. Is it okay if my 14" is going underneath its news paper no matter what? It just seems to prefer it there.. It's rather annoying for me to have to go looking around everytime I want to see her.
Thanks for looking guys! I dont know if you have hides in the cage for your milk or not..... but if you dont, you can buy the bottom water catch for flower pots for 50 cents and chip a little piece out of the side so they can get under... mine love these as hides. Just a though you can try, its cheap. Some snakes just love to burrow. I also have a shoe box of cypress mulch with my milks (as you can see in the pic) they love it! They hide in it almost all the time. Dan
Just use Aspen bedding and from what you mentioned about the length of your snake, distribute about 1/4 of an inch of the bedding around the area. Provide a hiding place on the warm section of the cage. That way, if your snake wants to be in a cooler side, she will come out and you can see her as she will rest above the bedding outside the hiding place.
Also, it would also help if you handle her more so that she will be less nervous when she sees you. Like let her crawl around your arm for 15 minutes daily while watching TV or something.
hope that helps.
Ray.

Aspen substrate is a good idea, but is it wise to make the animal choose between proper body temp and security?
Regarding the animal's choice of body temperature, the animal MUST HAVE a choice...and that is why the cage has to have a cool area (50-60F) and a warm area (75-83F).
But as far as security goes, the animal is a being raised as a captive snake...part of the enjoyment is handling them...and if you handle the snake regularly, it will not be afraid of you, even when you first walk into the room. I see most of my hondos moving around in the evenings and go back to their "snake houses" to sleep during the day.
Handle them daily (except the 2 days following feeding to avoid regurgitation). If you don't want to handle them regularly, I don't think you should expect the snake to be parading themselves around the cage...they are by nature aloof but handling them regularly would lessen their fear.

MAN I LOVE that snake! Thats not a Black Milk..... thats an Indigo! AWESOME MONSTER milk. Dan
Very nice picture. My female was extremely "blue" for the past week. I was going to take a picture and post, but she's cleared up now. Hopefully she'll be "friendly" with the male after the shed.
Here's a picture of here from back in December. (Very similar pic to the one that DNiles posted)

The guy I bought them from has many very expensive animals... extreme hondos and the like. But every time I visit his place, I cant wait for him to pull out those 6 foot monster black milks! These snakes are just SO impressive as adults. Thanks for the pic, Dan
