What is going on here??

waspinator421 Apr 03, 2008 06:41 PM

I took a look at Sable today and she seemed larger than normal in her rear. She refused her last two meals, but ate somewhat regularily before then. Her last shed was on Jan 28. What do you think? Big dookie? Just fat? Ovulation? Babies?? (crossing fingers) lol.

No, I never saw an ovulation. The male is still with her, and I will be keeping them together until I know for sure.

She looks like she could be gravid. The longer she goes without eating the more sure you can be. Did you ever see her hooking up with Flax and do you still have them together?

Dan

I never saw any courtship or mating at all, but they have been together since December. I still have Flax in with her now. It would be fantastic if she was gravid, but I'm trying really hard to not get my hopes up!

Of course the real question - what is "it" !!

IMO looks gravid, one thing to watch for is laying in odd positions like on her side or back.

Of course the not eating thing is also a good sign. Mine mostly fast while gravid.

Wishing you good luck with her!!!!

Since the topic of gravid feeding patterns came up I thought I'd ask what peoples experiences were.

Do yours normally go off food entirely or just switch over to smaller meals? Should they be fed at all during this period in your opinion?

I'm in a similar situation as Aubrey with my pair except my female does not look quite as definitively swollen yet.

Can't wait to see those babies Aubrey, assuming she is gravid.
Here's hoping we all get big litters this season

My experience is of course limited compared to others on this forum but I have found that my gravid girls don't feed at all. I have 3 expectant girls right now and all of them will smell offered food but then shy away from it.
Of the three, one of the gravid girls has bred for me before and her reaction to offered food has been the same each time. In fact, non feeding is one of the things I look for to tell me when she's taken. If any of them did feed I'd probably start second guessing whether or not they were actually gravid.

I offer small meals and most are turned down.

Good luck with her. Keep us updated as she progresses.
My first litter of brb's was a very similiar experience. I never witnessed any courting, breeding or an ovulation but the female started refusing meals and kept getting bigger around. Your post reminds me of that because I first noticed her size increase when she was curled up in the water bowl like in your photos.

Thank you Milo. That is neat that you had the same experience. Ooohh... gosh I hope there are babies cooking in there!

I'm surprised that you and Milo havn't seen any courting or mating. This is only my third year breeding but every year, as soon as I introduce the male to the female he imediatly shows interest. He will be flicking his tongue and follow her around and eventually lay next to or on top of her. This year I saw mating 5 times in the first week then nothing for a week so I seperated them and fed the two females, the male refused. I'll put them back together next week. When I've seen them mating, it seems to last for hours each time. Twice I've seen them mating when I got up in the morning and they were still going at it when I got home from work 11 or 12 hours later. One long session or two shorter ones? I suppose they could be having quikies too that I never see.

Dan

Miloradovich Apr 05, 2008 12:51 PM

I actually saw quite a bit of breeding this year. (They are all seperated now though) I was talking about my first litter of BRB's when I didn't witness any copulation. They must've all gotten over thier stage fright and become exhibitionists now.
These are some pics are from this season.

From what I've seen with my snakes, when they mate, it lasts for hours. I was just a little bit surprised that you wouldn't catch them in the act once in a while. Like Dave said, they are secretive and don't like to be disturbed when they are in the act, but they don't exactly stop when you catch them either.
