Northern Pine Color Change?

Joeycoco98 Apr 03, 2008 07:03 PM

I was wondering how long before your Northerns turned white or are they born already white? I am now the very happy owner of two pairs that are various shades of beige. I am looking for some hope that I will one day have some beautiful white and black Northerns.

It is so very hard to accurately predict how northerns will turn out. At first, it is only natural, if you are wanting the brightest white and black animal, to pick the baby that best signifies that. Thing is, such babies can turn different shades as they age.

I have many black and white northerns and I have seen at least two of my females turn at least three different shades of white as they are growing. I have had bright white and black babies gain a lot of red, which I really like and see as a bonus, and I have seen a red one as a baby turn into one of my best hi whites. To this date, only about two hi white northerns as babies have stayed that way as they have grown.

Thing is, this is one of the things I absolutely love about these snakes to begin with. I never get sick of owning them and I can't get enough of them. I love watching them change colors as they age, as to me, it is fun watching all of this take place.

Take lots of pics of your hatchlings and document how they change. You will really be surprised!!! It is all part of the fun!

Thanks for the reply and the pics. I got a pair of yearling bulls last year and got hooked immediately. Before last year I only dealt with Kings and milks with the occasional python or boa. I am truly hooked on these snakes now. So now I have two bulls and four pines along with my other animals. I hope I can stop buying before I have no more room. My bedroom in now my snake room and where my dining room table should be now has my bed!!! Thanks again for the pics and information

Ray, here is a pic of their father all the males he produced look like him it has been my experience that the females dont get as white as the males, but like the post below you could have a dark tea colored hatchling and it turns out bright white ,it takes about 2years to see the color you are going to have and they can change through out their life have fun northerns are a great snake Joe

Joeycoco98 Apr 03, 2008 10:20 PM

That is good to know Joe. I just got into pits last year so I dont' have a lot of knowledge on them yet. The Northern Pine is actually the first Pit I wanted to acquire but somehow I wound up with the bulls first. The beauties are eating rats right now as I type this. I am not a breeder so my snakes are pets and very spoiled! Thanks again for the xtra female, I cant' wait until they get some size on them.

Wow! She is so much bigger than she was when I left Houston. You are taking great care of her. You know she is the only snake that I did not keep when I left that I regretted not bringing with me. To make up for that now I have four of them LOL. Keep the pics coming of her, I would like to see how big she gets and if her color continues to change. Is she still a hisser, she had just a bit of attitude when I had her. I'll try to get some pics of mine up this weekend
