New corn snake

sirjorj Apr 03, 2008 07:36 PM

After about 6 years, I finally got a second snake! I got this little baby corn snake from a local Petco. I really wanted a male and I tried popping the ones they had to see, but I was unable to get any positives there. Either they had all females or I was being too gentle, and I would rather error on that side! Anyway, the one I ended up getting didn't pop out like the pictures and videos I've seen, but I did notice a tiny little red dot on each side of the cloaca. Does this indicate male or female or is it something both species have?

what kin was getting at, is if males aren't quite popped with enough force, the hemipene tips can sometimes just be visible, and not pop out all the way, and with some blood being forced to the end with the pressure from you squeezing, will look like two red dots. On the other hand, when females are tipically "popped", they will display a red dot on each side as well, but these are their pheromone "scent glands".

So as Kin mentioned, it can sometimes give a confusing "false reading" if not done correctly.

I'm guessing it's not too important right now if you know one way, or the other, but you have plenty of time to find someone to do it correctly, then you'll know exactly how to do it too. You have at least two years to find out!..LOL!

hope this helps, ~Doug

Thanks! I was hoping for a male and I saw nothing from the babies I tried to pop at the store. This one had the 2 red dots so I figured it was as close as any. I might just have to order a certified male from Kathy Love or something. I would really like an Okeetee!

certified males are usually easier than females - breeders often LIKE it when someone requests a male.

Okeetee's are an awesome choice!
