Housing a juvi black milk?

twometal Apr 03, 2008 11:04 PM

I plan on getting a 5-month old male black milk soon. He's about 10". I was going to get a small tank, but was recommended to go with a small tub. Would this work well?

I don't know if it's secure enough, I know these guys are notorious escape artists.
How long would something like this probably be good for?

Do I need any sort of uth? Temps in my house usually stay in the low 70s. I've read black milks don't like it to be much warmer. And if I don't need a thermal gradient, I don't need two hides?

So, then what I have on my to-get list so far is a small soaking bowl, a small hide, hygrometer/thermometer, aspen substrate, and some sort of supplemental lighting, since he's gonna be a part of my room that receives very little natural lighting. Any recommendation on lighting that works well with this tub?

Thanks guys, and I'll post pics as soon as I get some!

Hello,
That looks like a pretty good sized container... I use Sterilite shoeboxes for my hatchlings:

The lids on those don't really lock that well, so I put a brick on top of the container. These ones have very strong latches, I use them as feeding/transportation containers for my adults:

I was at Target just last night picking up supplies for transporting snakes and picked up a few of these:

No matter what you get, don't forget to drill plenty of air holes, and remove any ragged bits of plastic with a knife or razor blade! There are some good replies to Daniel Klopson's earlier black milk post regarding substrates and hides... mine like to hide under clay pots and saucers, just remember that if you break pieces off of them, always file down any sharp edges.
