melanistic thayeri

jr56 Apr 04, 2008 12:10 PM

Just a quick question for any breeders out there that have experience with melanistic thayeri. If you breed a pair of melanistics, will they throw all melanistic offspring, or a mixture?
Thanks,
Jeff Robbe

With melanistic thayeri there is no guarantees. Its something thats in the blood that is similar to the oreo pueblans that Shannon Brown started to produce.

You will more than like get some dark looking MSPs and possibly few melanistic.....but the trait is definitely not a single recessive trait. I tried it for years and all I ever got were MSPs, but I did raise a pair MSP up from a melanistic to melanistic pairing and they produced many melanistics.....never all melanistics.

In my experience I've always got all melanistics, and I know 2 other people with melainistic Thayeris and they always reproduced all melainistic thayeri. I've always thought it to be a recessive gene. Thats how this was possible.....
