Getting my first Retic!!!

gabe_c Apr 04, 2008 06:18 PM

So I am finally getting a Retic. Before you go bashing away, I do have experience with snakes, just never a Retic. From what I hear, it looks like it will be very rewarding. Now I have had two burmese (9' and 11'), 3 red tails, 5 ball pythons, probably over 20 colubrids, and some others. So two "big" ones. I just purchased a 4' tiger x jampea female. Beautiful snake with a lot of white and cream. Now here is where I am confused. I am estimating an average size of 11' or 12' when grown, if not power fed. Does this sound correct? I know Jampeas are smaller but being half I am not sure how it relates. Anyone with experience have an educated guess? Also, any tips on caring for her? I will definately breed her when she is ready, will make some killer offspring. She's super tame too. Oh, one more question. I have been looking at a sunfire retic, do they get the size of a normal retic? I have been told some of the color morphs don't get as large, but I dont believe it. I am ready for a large snake, but honestly not over 12', 15' MAX. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

One more thing, what is up with these new laws trying to pass? Whats a quick summary on them? Will they make it? Will it end it for us?

I don't know much about the locale sizes--

I do know that after about 10 foot-- there isn't much of a difference between 11 and 15---
We have MANY sizes here-- from 8 inches to a touch over 15 foot--

our big kids are:
8 foot
10 foot
11-12 foot
14' 1"
15"4

the last 2 were measured today by me-- using the rope/string method-- I put the rope to the end of thier nose, then run it down thier back- i use rope because it doesn't strech like string-- very accurate.

there is a visual difference between the 10 and 15 foot-- but when you have the 11-12 footer and the 15 footer out together--- can't really tell...

just something to think about--- we get a lot of burms because "they generally don't get over 10 foot" -- and thats the most people can "handle"--
not trying to bash-- just sharing my experience with 4 decent size snakes in a month---

There are 15ft Jampea's out there. Tigers are known to be one of the largest morphs. I'm willing to bet ALOT of money that your retic will be in the 15-16ft range as an adult. If it was a male you would have had a much better chance at having a smaller retic. Then again feed her less and she won't grow as large. Most of the giants out there have been feed to no end! Good Luck!
