But I can't see from your pics if it is a baby northern water snake or a baby corn snake. Can you describe its belly? Also, if you look at any scale on its neck or back, can you see a raised line or ridge running down its length?

Its a water snake of some subspecies(northern?), it is not harmfull and should be let go near a water source that wont dry up. Scott
That's a young water snake, Nerodia sipedon. It could be either a Northern Water Snake, N. s. sipedon, or a Midland Water Snake, N. s. pleuralis, or an intergrade of the two. Identifying the specific subspecies is difficult, since the two interbreed in your area. In any case, it's nonvenomous. Adults typically reach 2 to 3.5 feet in length.
