Necessity for the male to shed first?

Conserving_herps Apr 04, 2008 08:19 PM

Has anyone of you guys been successful in breeding a pair with the male not shedding yet after brumation? In other words, the female has done post-brumation shedding and was ovulating and receptive to the male but the male has not shed yet....but mating was successful several times. They are both proven breeders but this is the first time that I have allowed a mating to take place without the post-brumation shedding of the male hondo. I wonder if it will be successful or will she produce slugs.

Thanks for the input.

Hi Ray,

We have had several males breed while in shed with success.

Same here, I have two males that will breed during shed cycles etc...They don't care and its the female thats important.

There's no possible way the male wouldn't be fertile one day, then shed a couple hours later and then just magically become fertile the second his skin came off, like a light switch,....know what I mean?

Like the others have mentioned, I've had lots of males in deep blue that "sniffed" their way to knockin' boots with the female.

If you had sunglasses on, would it stop you?...(funnin' of course!)

take care my friend!, and good luck with production!

All your feedback certainly gave me great comfort and relief.

Thank you!

Doug, your "sunglasses" comment was hilarious! I laughed, paused and said to myself: "he's got a point there"...and just shook my head with a big smile on my face...pretty funny.

From what I understand, just before the female sheds she secretes an oil containing pheromones between the old skin and the new scales. So after she sheds, her scent will draw the males to breed with her.
