going through withdrawl..... rambling

steffke Apr 05, 2008 09:16 AM

Well Turtle Times has had some issues and has been down for most of the week. I regularly lurk/post there. Its been tough, but i am glad for this forum too, so that I have at least one more outlet. This winter has been long and gray, but it may actually get up into the 60s here today. I hope so anyway. I don't know how Golfdiva and other northerners are hold up (especially with her ornate taking holiday without telling her where she was going!), but I am in great need of sunshine.

I enjoy seeing everyones photos. If it is warm enough today I'll take my some photos and try and post them too.

It's been a rough winter in addition to the bad weather I had some significant health issues that plagued me too. Leaking apendix.......... took over 6 month and 7 doctors, I forgot the number of tests... but I was really sick. A bit depressed too, so I am glad you all are okay (Hope the ornate comes home soon too Golfdiva, it would make me insane. BFWIW Hobbs, my ornate took a 3 week vacation in the back yeard one summer. She did come home.)and hope that there are lots of hatchling photos soon.

Thanks for listening......

Ok, whomever lives in Michigan needs to go give Steffke a hug!

I'm so sorry to hear about the rough time you are having. Just think, this summer should be all the sweeter after your terrible winter!

You need a vacation!

Thanks Ken, long distant hugs are fine too. I am looking forward to summer. It turned out to be fairly nice yesterday so I spent some time outside.

I actually have some time off this week, and I hope it will stay nice so I can be outside more. I need to play with my turtles. My "little" 3 toe is now as big as my Florida. Her head is a marbled red. It keeps getting brighter, richer red each year. Photos never seem to do her justice.

I turned over the leaves in the compost pile and found some super night crawlers. I hope she will enjoy them. No slugs as yet though, but who knows what I'll find today. (My Florida loves her slugs). My ornate won't get her favorite treat until the mulberries come in, which won't be until late June or early July for this area. I might have to go buy her some babyfood jar mulberries unitl then.

HEY! Golfdiva, the babyfood jar of mulberries! That might just do he trick for your ornate. If it is under the heat lamp it will cause the fine mulberry smell to waft down the tunnel. She might come out for that! It is the only thing I can think of that would get mine's attention.

Hope that helps, at least a little! Thanks for the idea steffke. I tried putting a piece of musk mellon near the tunnel enterance. The next day it was gone alright, but there were squirrel tracks all around the area too!

After the great weather yesterday and today I was hopeful. Unfortunately I had to be gone all day today. I finally got home around 7:30 pm, and checked the pen. I DID see what looked like some turtle tracks. So hopefully she came out for some sun, but when back in the tunnel.

I keep telling myself she will come out soon!

Turtle tracks are a very good sign! My ornate ran away another time too. She was gone 3 days. I was really depressed. My husband found her at the edge of our property line. She had wedged herself beteen the lilac trucks literally. She would try and move for a few minutes rustling leaves in the process, then stop, wait a few minutes and try again.

It was after this that I trained my dog to help spot and track them. If I were closer I'd pop by with him. We could place him down the other opening of the hole and he'd herd her up. He noses them along............ She might end up being rolled up if she pulled into her shell though.

O.K.... does Steffke live in MI? I thought elsewhere.

steffke Apr 08, 2008 07:55 AM

Yes I live in Michigan, but I was an Army brat so I have lived most everywhere at one time or another!

I'm a native of Montana originally. I must say we got more snow here this year than my family out west did!
