07 Blue Stripe (similis)

Steve_Craig Apr 05, 2008 12:23 PM

I'd say out of all my garters, this girl is my pride & joy. She's an 07 from Scott Felzer. Feeding on large fuzzies or small hoppers. I like blue stripe garters so much, I'm going to pick me up a male this year, and maybe another female as well. First pic is when I first received her. Not impressive when they are first born. The last pics were taken today, and you can see what a huge difference in just under 9 months. Steve

Thanks Jeff. You have a couple of beauties as well. I really like your oregon red-spotted garter, and when I find one available I plan to get one or two. What is yours feeding on now?

Thanks Steve! Both of mine are eating pinky rats but, they've also eaten fuzzy mice before.Between the two,I like the black necked better because he's a little more handleable, the red spot is really flight but, so far hasn't tried to bite.

BeautifuL !!! Wow ! if I knew Mine would turn out that great I would order a pair from Scott this year ! I may anyways ! im really starting to get into garter snakes ! Im hoping to get some flame eastern garters and maybe a california red stripe from Scott this year.

Im thinking about aquiring a female blue stripe from Scott this year and I was wondering how hard was she to get to eat when you first recieved her. and what was you feeding her ? I was told most of the tiny hatchling garters could be fed on rosies, and guppies until they are big enough to accept pinks and rats. Sorry for the questions, Im new to garters.

You can just feed a combination of fish and worms to start out, or you can try and get them on rodnets right away. It's up to you. I like to have my garters on rodents ASAP. All of my mine were eating pinky parts within a week after I received them.
The method I used for my snakes was that I placed live rosy reds in a water dish. I scented the pinky parts with the rosy reds, and placed the pinky parts in the water dish with the live fish. As the garters hunt for the rosy reds, this stirs up the floating rodent parts, causing movement, and the next thing you know, the garter has grabbed hold of a pinky part. Make sure it's a small sized dish so the rodent parts and rosy reds are kind of in close quarters. Garters for the most part are aggressive feeders, and I don't think you'll have any problem at all.

Steve,

That is a beauty! It is even more colorful than the adults that produced it. It is amazing the difference in coloration between the babies and the adults.

Thanks Scott. I'm sure there's a bunch of gorgeous blue babies that came from those adult breeders this past year. It would be neat to see a sampling of some clutchmates of mine to see how they've developed.
