Real Problems

mack1time Apr 05, 2008 05:42 PM

I have a late 2007 blizzard that is having some real troubles.
He seems to only be able to handle 1 pinky. as soon as I make the switch to fuzzies he regurges.

I have given pinkies for 9 months now and no matter what as soon as I try a fuzzy he ends up regurging a few days later????

He looks like he has barely even grown in 9 months?

Any suggestions? should I euthanize???

why would you euthanize this animal?!!?!!?!?!?!?!?!
thats overkill--- literally!

try 2 pinkies in one sitting--

try a rat pinkie-- they are somewhat larger than mouse pinks, they're more healthy, easier to digest-- and still have no hair.

If the differences between the pinky and the fuzzy-- are only slightly larger and fuzzy---
try a rat pinkie and see if it is a size issue or a hair issue...

don't kill an animal without trying everything!

I have a large collection and am starting to get worried it may be something else.

He is fine on 1 or 2 pinkies usually than I try 1 fuzz and he regurges. I wait 2 weeks and start again with 1 pinky for a couple feeding and than 2 again. I continue with 2 for a month or 2 and than try a fuzzy and same thing happens. This recent time He can't even hold down 2 pinks anymore and regurged 1!!!

This has been an ungoing thing for 9 months!!!!

i have hatched out troubled feeders before that were easier to deal with than this and I really don't want the animal to suffer or to spread anything by Air even tho it is on the complete opposite side of the house than my snake room.

Most of us take our pets to the vet when they have problems and let the vet decide whats best, Sounds like a good idea to me. I to have a midlate 07 Corn that is also smaller than I would think for his age and only takes pinkies but so far he is gaining weight and keeps food down. Speaking of weight, is yours gaining it on the pinkie diet? I fail to understand why you would push the issue if he was doing on ok 1-2 pinkies. Are you trying to get him to power feed? I just don't get it.

I just cannot understand why you would want to kill a snake that is eating for you?? But, I also remember that last year you fed a problem feeder snow corn hatchling to a king snake.. If dealing with an occasional problem feeder is too much for you to handle then maybe you can give them to someone with more time and experience to deal with???

I realize that a vet visit may seem costly just to save a baby corn, but until you learn how to deal with issues like this on your own, I think a vet visit is in order!

I would SERIOUSLY consider a dose of Flagyl(Metronidazole). This has stopped a few regurges I've had in the past DEAD IN IT'S TRACKS!. The snake could very well have a stomach/intestinal pathogen(s), such as Entamoeba invadens, Trichomonas. Balantidium, Rhizopoda, Flagellates, or Ciliates. Flagyl will open a can of "whip-ass" on ALL of these.

I strongly suggest you take it to a qualified reptile vet for diagnosis if you bring a fresh stool sample for a "fecal floatation".

Constant regurgetations will certainly lead to it's death if left untreated.

The proper dosing is 25 to 50 mg. per kg. of body weight. This drug is very well tollerated by snakes, and I go with the higher 50 mg. per kg.

You REALLY need to stop messing around, and get the snake to a vet, where he/she can DO something for the snake. I would have done something about it long before this.

BTW,...DO NOT offer the snake ANY more food until you get it you get the snake medicated, more meals will just send the snake further down the tube until it dies. If you do something SOON, there's a very good chance that it will thrive, and do well from then on.

hope it pulls through okay!, let us know what happens.

Something I use is called Safeguard. It is Fenbendazol. (I think that is the spelling) It is similar to panacure. It is used on horses and you can not overdose. I have used it on the smallest of garter snake babies. I even had to use it on my fox snake babies. I put a little on a pinkie once a week for three weeks. It has allways worked. You can get it at feed places like Agway. Cheers Greg.

That's right Greg, as a matter of fact Fendbendazole IS Panacur(trade name), and it treats Strongyles and different types of intestinal worms, .....this is another thing that could be the problem too, and a fast vet visit with a fresh stool sample is the only way most snake owners will get an accurate diagnosis, and ultimately, a treatment. The correct dosage for Fendbendazole, is 50-100 mg. per kg. of body weight. I highly recommend a vet visit ASAP!

I agree - I had a king that just wasn't growing and was regurging anything bigger than a peach fuzzy.

The cause was hookworm.

Once treated - she kept down two fuzzies, then a hopper, then adult mice.

Very good point too,.........good things CAN happen when you take action.

Glad to hear it's thriving well after that treatment.
