Breeding Gecko Underweight

aanata1 Apr 06, 2008 09:30 AM

This is my girls second breeding season. She laid eggs twice ending about a month ago. It took her a bit longer than usual to lay the second pair, and then she stopped eating and stopped laying. Her tail seems emaciated and I can see her spine just a tiny bit, but she seems fat through her sides. Her activity is normal aside from not wanting to eat. Any advice? I know I know... take her to the vet. If this continues for much longer I will. In the meantime, I was wondering if this can be normal for breeding time, or if she is in any kind of serious danger. Thanks a ton! Oh and I know she has a few marks on her head and tail... that's just from the male... he's fiesty!

yeah, she really doesn't look good. you should get ron tremper's book on leopard geckos, in the back there's a section on disease. there's def. something wrong with your gecko. have you noticed her poop looking any different than usual? geckos with the disease crypto, nicknamed "pencil tail" will have their shed skins in their poop because they are unable to digest it. the body of the gecko looks a lot better than the tail, thats the only reason why i am thinking that. i would def. separate it from all the other geckos and i would suggest getting a fecal done. make sure you get it done from somplace reputable though, Dr. Frye is the only one i know of, you'll have to get them shipped out. if you are breeding it really helps to have a "clean" breeding group.

The vet said she thinks she's eggbound. She'll get some oxytocin to induce labor this afternoon. The vet bill will be a bit high, but I love my girl to pieces. If this doesn't work, surgery's the only other option and I think she's too weak to make it through that. I hope she's ok!

Here's hoping the meds will work, we've seen a few pull through the surgery too, little belly stitches.

I noticed your girl's a light albino. Our vet taught us a trick that she joked, "I love albinos because I never need xrays!" If you hold her above your head with a light behind her, you should see if she's got the egg or eggs still stuck. It is like candling your gecko. It is a good way to monitor her progress and she if they are moving/growing/ or being reabsorbed.

Really should have been taken in much sooner with a tail that skinny, but if she can handle a "feisty" male, here's hoping she'll pull through.

After two shots of oxytocin and being warmed up in an incubator all night at the vet still nothing. The vet thinks her eggs are stuck to her uterus. The vet said that we could aspirate the eggs, but since they are most likely stuck, that really wouldn't do anything, so surgery is really her only other option. I know she's weakened, but the vet thought it was her best shot to live, so we opted for surgery. I'm really hoping my little girl pulls through.
