Cyclophiops major - Giant Green Snake

dekaybrown Apr 06, 2008 02:53 PM

With very little data to go by, I figured I will just give it my best.

I built a large upright tank 18x24 at 48" tall, it stands like a soda machine. For now I strung some cat 5 wire like vines, and built a monkey perch with a dowel rod.

Not knowing what the snake prefers, I set up a warm side and a cool side and let the snake choose. He seems happiest at 75-80 degrees.

I found out the hard way that just because a tank is snake proof, it is not cricket proof!! they went out the air holes last night.

Docile as a corn snake, no musk or bites yet

Better pictures soon. (he's basking now)

Peace,
Wayne

>>>"With very little data to go by"

Ain't that the truth??,......Yes, for some reason, not much is known about these, literature or data-wise, and only fairly recently have become more available than they were in past years. Additionally, there's been a great amount of taxonomic confusion with their classification as well.

I've read that they do well on earthworms, and frogs, and it sounds like you have a good "handle" on the husbandry of keeping them. I know they like a high humidity, as this is the case in the moist Asian bamboo forests from which they are indigenous.

Cool snakes!,.......if I kept them, I'd probably keep them much the same as you are.

Thanks for the kind words Doug!

Here is a shot of the enclosure. The lamp is a 12 volt
L.E.D lamp, low voltage & no heat. So if the snake wraps around the fixture it is harmless.

I have to run to town tomorrow, the monitor ate all his crickets up, 18 crickets in a day and a half..(I shudder to think about how much meat this critter will consume - more female mice please.)

Anyhow, I am picking up a shower curtain with jungle pattern, and I am going to line the inside of the box with it. then the humidity will not warp my boards & it will look sharp.

The cat 5 wire will be replaced with fake vines, and I was thinking of a potted tree in the center of the box.

Cover the box with woodgrain paneling, and it would look nice in any room.

He sure is an interesting snake this morning he dug in the coconut dirt, drank from his water bowl, stared at the fish swimming in it, then ate a big worm. Good signs for a wild caught.

The lime green with lemon yellow accents are very handsome, he has a slender build, almost whip like. I am told he is a male.

I told my honey the Savannah was her birthday present, and once the fed ex was paid the snake just hitched a free ride

Now I see a 8' x 4' x 4' cage sitting in the reptile room soon, and burrowing clay, UV lights etc..

Peace,
Wayne

Sounds like you and the snake are on your way!

And yes, eating snake(especially one of that type) = VERY good sign!

i kept one of these for about a year but i traded it! it ate TONS of worms. i'm talking about 5-10 big ones a day. don't buy baitshop worm unless you know where they come from, because most farmed worms don't have the nutrition your snake will need, and your snake will starve slowly to death. i never did get it to eat anything else, and i tried it all! i kept it in a 55gal tank with climbing branches. it didn't climb much at all and spent most of its time coiled up in a hide box w/ damp sphagnum moss. they love humidity, mine was happy at about 75-80F with a moist hidebox and cypress mulch substrate misted daily. it fed out of a tupperware box with a small hole cut in the top and washed live worms inside. i love you custom setup!!! only problem i see is that these snakes don't climb much and prefer a setup more like you would set up a garter snake. good luck, that is a beautiful snake if you can keep up with the feeding!

“I kept one of these for about a year but I traded it!”
I enjoy mine too much. He’s a great pet, hope I still feel the same next year.

“Don’t buy bait shop worms”
I harvest my own worms, and provide a worm food that is high in protein and calcium. Worms are actually very nutritious and easy to feed.

“It didn't climb much at all and spent most of its time coiled up in a hide box”

That’s odd, mine barely comes down from his tree and he seems to really enjoy it when I let him out, He likes the crab apple tree in the back yard a lot. The "rope lights" in the basement den draw him.

"I love your custom setup!!!"

Thank you! Building cages is fun and rewarding. And about the only way I can afford to house my animals.

“Good luck that is a beautiful snake if you can keep up with the feeding!”

Thanks again, He sure is handsome, feeding him is actually fun, and only takes a few minutes. My kids love him, and he is so super docile, never stinks on anyone...

Kind regards,
