Sweet Big Snakes?

aanata1 Apr 06, 2008 11:04 PM

I've had Brazilian Rainbow Boas for a few years now and love them. However, I have always wanted a snake that got pretty big. No longer than 8', but definitely a bit thinker than the Brazilians. I love to handle my snakes... and treat them as my pets/kids. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what kind of snakes I should look into. I held a 6' Argentine Boa a few years ago, but don't know much about them, but it was way cool!

Well a few snakes come to mind. How about a true Hogg Isle Boa Constrictor? They are wonderful to work with. They are easy and should stay under 8'. Also check out Blood Pythons. They tend to stay shorter than 8' and are super thick.

Jungle Carpets would be a possibility.

The Hogg Isle Boa is something I hadn't previously known about. I'm definitely going to look into that, but it seems that they are rare... know anywhere to get one?

I had a Blood Python once. She was one of the nastiest snakes I've ever seen. Could very well have just been her, but I have had WC's nicer than she was a day in her life. Not to shun the whole species, but I think I'm going to admit when I've been beat and leave those alone

Jungle Carpets... hmmm... that's also an idea. I've heard that they are kinda nasty too, but have never really looked into it. I will now.

Keep the suggestions coming if there are anymore out there. I love the thought of getting into a new species ~

a good place to start looking for any snake is the classifieds section at the top of this page. I just did a quick scan of the 'boa constrictors' page and found several people selling hog isle boas. It will be much cheaper than buying from a pet store but the down side is that unless you can find a breeder in your are you could drop an extra 50 or so dollars on shipping. In many cases it still winds up being cheaper...

How about a dumeril's boa?

I thought they got about the same size as the BRBs. I could be wrong. I've always thought they were stunning tho.

what's wrong with a regular boa constrictor or red tail? most max out at 8ft, although they can get bigger, up to 10ft for monsters. and a huge plus is, you can usually find them up for adoption! so you get a cool new pet for free or a nominal fee, and you saved an animal from most likely dieing in a cramped box. check craigslist.com in the pets section or call the spca and they may refer you to someone. good luck, i hope you get what you're looking for!

I actually started looking into it, the hoggs seemed a bit small, so I ended up getting this guy. He's a 66% poss het leopard and 66% poss het anery, he'll be arriving next week sometime! And maybe I'll look for a het leo and anery female for him later! Thanks for the advice guys!
