Where did the tricolors come from?

mfoux Apr 06, 2008 11:10 PM

I'm a king and milk guy, so I was surprised to see the tricolor hogs at a show in 2006. I've been meaning to ask what the heck is up with that!? Interesting stuff. How did they come to be?

They've actually been around since before the turn of the century. Though they are related (being Xenodontine Colubrids) their husbandry and, particularly, reproductive biology is quite a bit different from North American hoggnose. I think it took breeders a while to really get "on" to them.

I remember first seeing them pictured in the early 1980's in Mertens "Living Snakes of the World". I vowed right then and there that someday I'd work with them. The snake pictured in that book was labeled as "Lystrophis semicinctus", whereas by far the most common species in captivity is L. pulcher. All are extremely interesting and attractive snakes!

Thanks, guys. I had no idea they were anything other than a custom morph of the N.A. hogs. Very interesting!
