Liquid Calcium

SmuckersHuman Aug 29, 2003 02:05 PM

My dragon, Smuckers, has metabolic bone disease. I give him suppliments daily of liquid calcium which he absolutely loves.
My question is this: does anyone know where I can order some without going through my vet every few weeks?

The name on the prescription is "calcium glubionate" and the manufacturer is listed as Midwest. I have looked into other forms of liquid calcium from human pharmacies and they contain sucrose. I have been told that you cannot give dragons sucrose (I assume that sugar in any form is bad for dragons!).

If anyone can give me some info I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks for your help!

I know of one that is sold online at AAA reptile supply. Only thing is this bottle has no label and I'm not sure what is in it. I also never used this before copy and paste.

There is also a product sold at pharmacies called Cal-100 (pink red box). This stuff is a powder. It's calcium carbonate and you mix it with water. Each packet contains 1,000 mg. Calcium carbonate and 400 i.u. vitamin D. Directions stir one packet into 8 ounces of favorite beverage. Water or Gatorade would work for a dragon. Not sure how much you should give or how to get proper dosage. Bought this for an emergency. Thank God never needed it. Get opinions on this before using it for proper dosage. This has no sugars. Ingredients are just Calcium Carbonate and vitamin D (cholecalciferol). Like I said get info from someone more experienced with dosages. I never used this product, but if dosed properly seems like it would work OK. Get others opinions first please.

Hope this info helps some. A Mercury vapor bulb would help a lot with the treatment of MBD. Good luck.

Just realized that calcium from AAA does not contain Vit. D3. This is important for the absorption of the calcium. Would need natural sunlight for the dragon to make it's own d3 to absorb that calcium, or use powder with d3 on the crickets. Ohh I hope the doc told you that short time out in natural sun would be great for this sick dragon. Don't leave him out long they can over heat. They need shade too if kept outside for a length of time. I take mine out for a half an hour a day. Good luck.
