substrate that can be ingested fine?

trex8692 Apr 07, 2008 09:47 PM

is there any natural looking substrate that, if ingested, will pass through the digestive system naturally and without any problems?

or wat about natural look substrate that is too large to be ingested.

i was thinking about zoo meds clay,, and etc.

does any such thing exist? because i mean in pakistan and india, there is alot of hard packed clay that occaisionally gets loose and i always wondered if animals there ingest that stuff.

p.s. i would NEVER use any of that substrate, i plan on paper towels only, cause of the whole "just to be sure" factor

Not necessarily ingested, but some people do use stone tiles instead of PT or just cover the toilet with PT over the tile. There are two main problems with this, commercial glazed tile contains lead (your call to use it or not) and secondly you may have heat problems as it takes more heat power to get through a thick tile than thin papertowel. (However it also stays warm longer, giving a more natural gradient some would argue.)

I haven't found any unglazed here, save for terra cotta. I have heard of other luckier people finding slate titles.

Just another idea.

You should get Ron Tremper's book, theres a nice section on substrate and how to make your own using slabs. I use the old fashion newspaper or reptile carpet (gets really dirty and holds smell though). Research it online, theres bound to be something that will look good and be safe. best of luck!
