Temperatures and Thermometers

jwainhause Aug 29, 2003 02:45 PM

I'm the proud father (not bilogical) of three 2-month old hatchlings who are depending on me to not cook or freeze them. I have a two part question here - what are the proper basking and ambient temperatures (day and night)? I have seen and heard so many varying ranges. Next, how does one get an acurate reading? I have one of those $30 Radioshack thermometers that has a probe which is intead to measure outside air temp. Should I be taking surface temperatures and if so will a digital thermometer like mine be accurate? I see that many people do with less than digital thermometers so I wonder if I am getting to worried about this.

A digital thermometer is fine. You want your probe to be directly under your heat source, where the beardie basks. The basking temp needs to be at least 100 for proper digestion. The cool end of your enclosure should be around 85 degrees.
