Pooping in the humid hide.....

Leo Lover May 23, 2003 02:51 AM

My african fat tails, have recently been pooping in the humid hide every single time they go to the bathroom. Every day I clean it and put in new paper towels.

The thing is, they haven't done this at all in the past, why all of a sudden now? This has been going on for a almost a month. So I tried putting the humid hide in a different spot in the warm area, but they just keep pooping in it?

I mean I dunno what it is....and why they like pooping in it so much? Its like they are doing it just to get a rise out of me or something! LOL, couldn't you just see them with evil little grins laughing at me and watching me change the paper towels in it:P

Question is....how do I make them stop? :P

They may be smelling the fecal material in the hide. Even if you change the paper towel, the smell remains. They are probably attracted to that. I would switch the hide with a brand new on. Take some feces and put it where you want them to go, and see if they follow the smell. Just a theory. Let me know if it works.

They may like the privacy. Try adding a little curtain over the door. Some little magazines would be nice. I like woodworking and herp magazines. They might like some soft charmin too. Just be sure they wash their hands, because their poopy can be dirty. Hence the term poopy.

Remember,

If they shake it once its ok.
If they shake it twice thats fine,
If they shake it 3 times, they're playing with it.

Im actually a zoology and genetics teacher in the spring. Anatomy and Microbiology in the fall. I try to avoid 9th graders like the plaque. They're mean and evil. I like the mature (lol)juniors and seniors.

Feel bad for the victims of the 9th graders in my school. Past two years have been bad, new guys can't stay on the payroll since the grades are so bad. Though most people know its the fault of the "boys home kids" that set fires and curse out the poor teachers fresh out of college... the school says that the students have maliable minds, and can be controled by better teachers... This year we're loosing the first herpitologist major I've seen in the school. Sadly this guy doesn't get enough credit... Even the local paper screwed him. In Newsday there were pictures of his hand holding a rare salamander, and he wasn't given credit for the pic, or the find...

Why anyone would want to be a teacher, I will never know.

Sometimes I have hatchlings that poop in their humid hide for some reason... all I do is take the soiled paper towel and place it in the corner of the enclosure.

They should start "going" in the place that you moved the paper towel, as this is where the will smell the feces.

This works for me 99% of the time, hopefully your fat tails will not be too stubborn, lol.

Good luck, and the website looks great.

I have some little farts. And I use that term in a loving way. That crap ontop of their hides. I use the plastic planter holders as hides and some of them just love to crap ontop of their hides. Its actually kind of a pain and have not found a way yet to discourage this behavior.

My fat tails love to do their business on top of their humid hides as well (I use sandwich containers)... I also have not found a way to discourage them.

Lots of scrubbing.
