Is my snake eggbound?

Chez1983 Apr 08, 2008 12:39 PM

My corn snake laid 16 eggs on Sunday, she was fine yesterday but when I looked at her this morning she has got 2 lumps just above her tail. Is she egg bound or do they lay eggs in batches??

They usually lay them in a single pass, typically 7 to 10 days after prelay shed - sometimes it takes a little longer.

I'D GIVE HER 1 MORE DAY... then i'd take her to the vet.... sounds like there might be some slugs she couldnt work out.... slugs are sometimes larger.... and harder to pass... but most of the time they are smaller....

All of the eggs will be slugs because we have 2 females together. Does the fact that they are all infertile or that there is no male presence make them more likely to become eggbound?

STEVES_KIKI Apr 08, 2008 03:33 PM

WELL... EGG BOUND IS AN ODD THING..... it can be because she is too small....too tired, too old, the eggs could have just been oddly shaped... or turned just a tad... it can be sooo many things... calcium buildup on the slugs... i mean tons... so theres no telling why.... also... if another snake is bothering it or trying to get in the same hide box might upset the female and make her stop passing eggs... for example some people leave the male in with their females until they lay which is VERY VERY bad b/c the male is like a typical human male...no offense.... and they want booty when they see it.... so they might try to mate with the female again and the female will become egg bound... sorry i kinda rambled there... but i hope i sorta answered your question

Is it true they will still lay eggs even if no males are around?
I know of some birds that do this, I didn't think snakes did.

Yes it's true. Some lizards do too.

Thanks to everyone for the advice.

I agree with the others,.....give her one more day, but after that, a vet visit is in order....for the snake's sake, don't put it off!

Normally, females will lay all of them at one sitting, this can sometimes take many hours,.....but this is VERY taxing on the female's strength, and she could have became a little too tired since she passed a pretty fair number already,.....but again, don't wait longer than one more day. The vet can either palpate the remaining ones out, or pierce between the ribs with a large needle with syringe attached, and draw the yolk out of any that are too big for her to safely pass.

good luck with her!
