Wow. I dont normally get excited about yellows, unless it's the Doublemint Spearmint bubblegum colored one in the Audobahn book, but that one is a NICE looking yeller.
Flourescent or incandescent lighting in the pic? Looks very "white" like flourescent.

Tom,.......it was taken outside underneath my screened porch with a good amount of ambient Sunlight. The gray you see in the background is the painted concrete porch slab.

Ya know, I don't usually get too excited about yellow Rats either, but hear on the east coast of central Florida, there are some REALLY sweet looking brightly colored quadrivittata.

The way I see it, they are in their purest form here, because the DON'T have any influence from the Gray(spiloites)to the northwest, no influence from Everglades(rossalleni)to the south/southwest, and certainly no influence from obsoleta from the distant north/northwest. It is all by itself here, isolated from anything else whatsoever, and I really like that about this location. I captured another one here in the exact same area about only about one mile from this one, and it was simply unbelievable!,...man, it was vivid banana yellow!.....that was about 20 years ago,.....man, I sure do wish I still had her to pair up with this nice male,.....what a sweet pairing that would make!......no pics of her either!!!...GRRR!....oh well....

best regards, ~Doug

That is reaaly impressive. How big is he?

Here's a photo(not great quality) of the little guy just after I captured him back on 4/10/05. I noticed our five Miniature Wire-haired Dachshunds barking their fool heads off one night, so I grabbed a flashlight and went out back to see what all the ruckus was about. Well, the five dogs had this Yellow Rat totally surrounded in a tight circle,...the poor snake could hardly keep them at bay, as he was all raised up with his mouth opened in the typical "S" fashion.
I reached down to spare him from the five "killer" dogs, and thought, wow!,..this dude's pretty nice lookin', except for being pretty thin. He only weighed 97 grams, and was 40 inches long, apparently he had a pretty tough life out on his own.

So I took him in, and set him up with a descent enclosure, and offered him a F/T mouse, well, he accepted it, but ever since that night I first caught him, I noticed his feeding/striking response isn't really as fast and violent as many other ratsnake's responses are. This is no doubt part of the reason he was so thin when I captured him, I'm sure a lot of potential meals where able to get away in time.

In any case, he's been doing GREAT since then, and put on a bunch of weight since then too. I weighed him the other day, and he now weighs 520 grams!, quite a big difference than the thin shape he was in before. Quite a difference between then, and now!

I'll measure him sometime soon, and give you guys an accurate measurement.

thanks again guys for the nice compliments, and thanks for reading the short story behind him.

best regards, ~Doug

The yellow rat was the first pet snake I ever owned. I paid $27 for it at a local pet store, without mom's permission LOL. I think I was probably 16 at the time.
I walked in the house with it and begged her to give me a chance with it. She did, and it's been downhill ever since then!!!!

Seeing that gorgeous yellow you have brings back some fond memories of those first few years of keeping snakes. Shortly after was an amel corn that got out after about a week ahahahaha. OOPS!

Thanx again Doug for an awesome shot. That snake's a keeper! (Like I really have to convince you )

Yeah, In southern Florida Waaaay back in the late 60'-70's I had some nice Yellow Rats too as a kid, as well as Indigos, cornsnakes, Rough Green Snakes, Florida Kings, Banded Water Snakes, Scarlet Kings, etc....

I have a fond memory of walking home after purchasing a HUGE Yellow Rat from an older kid around the block, and while trying to "wrestle" the giant thing to keep from stepping on the monster 7 footer, it proceeded to bite me in my neck a few times!....man!,...did THAT hurt!...........so I got him home, washed all the blood from my neck and shirt, and have been admiring snakes ever since!..LOL!

thanks again for the nice comments!

Beautiful snake, Doug! He looks "fat" and happy.

DMong Apr 09, 2008 08:17 PM

Thanks a bunch!,.......he really is doing great now, and he's got such an easier life than he apparently had in the wild before,....he was certainly having a rough time of it then.

I'd really like to find a stunning female again from this area to match him up with, I really like the idea of having some vividly yellow colored locality animals,......then, when prospective buyers inquire about the hatchlings, I break-out a photo of the parents, and their jaws hit the ground!..LOL!.....that's the plan on those!..LOL!

best regards, ~Doug
