My wife was out in Arizona the last few days. I joked with her not to get near ANY snakes out there, UNLESS it was black/white/black/white/black/white
There's something about the wild caught versions of those Cal Kings that really excites me. The CB just dont do it for me. I find it hard to believe they actually exist in the wild.
Great find!!
Keeper?

No, I've got 60 snakes, so I didn't collect that one. I do agree with you though that there's something about wild caughts that is attractive.

Very cool find, Tim!..........how did you come upon it?
I'm jealous,...... if Black Racer's(Coluber c. priapus) were highly prized, I'd be driving around in a "Twin-Turbo Bentley" by now!
Where I used to live, there were MANY wooded lots around us in the rural neighborhood, and it seemed almost every time I stepped outside I'd see one!...I even saw one snatch a lizard(Anole) out of a bush, and fall to the ground with it in it's mouth a few months ago..LOL!
Don't get me wrong, there's certainly some other cool snake's in my area too, but MAN!, are those racer's abundant....geeesh!

Doug,
It was right under the first rock I lifted at a park I was visiting. I searched for three more hours and didn't find another snake. It was very odd to have such an "easy find," but I'm not complaining!

Did you really find him in Gilroy? I used to live in San Martin and Morgan Hill. Used to find alot of Kings when I lived up on Croy Rd. I wasn't really into snakes at the time, would just catch them and then let them go. I found a really nice black and red (I don't remember it having any white on it but this was about 15 years ago so the memory is hazy) King that was somewhere around four foot long. I do remember that it didn't try to bite me when I picked it up.
That's a nice looking little snake! Almost wish I was back in Cali so that I could go snake hunting, now that I know alot more about them! Don't see much in the way of wild snakes where I live here in Washington (did catch a garter snake outside the apartment that I used to live in, saved him from a bunch of 7 year olds).
Manda in Seattle
Damien- Black Mexican King
Nibbles- Normal Motley Corn
Gratch- Okeetee Corn
Soon to be adding more, just can't decide what I want
If you know where to look, Rubber Boas are fairly abundant in WA.
Or so I've heard anyway.

I decided my old sig was too big.
Really??? I'm gonna have to look into that! Would give me something to do when the weather warms up (if it ever warms up).
Thanks!

Rubber Boas are actually a snake that prefer things to be on the slightly cooler side.

Ah, Tim, good one! Everytime I pass through the northeast or southeast I seem to miss the timing, dang it!

Nice find up in garlic town. The dark bands are darker there than the coastals I've found in the Santa Monica Mtns, but similar to the ones I've found in the Simi Foothills here in SoCal. Do you have a full body shot where the band count is available? The ones here avg. band counts in the mid 30's.
