Corn snake bleeding during copulation

canderson Apr 10, 2008 02:23 PM

Hi All,

It has been a long time since I've bred snakes but I have a pair of adult corn snakes that hooked up the other day. And I noticed when they were coupled that blood was dripping out of the cloaca. Has anyone ever seen this before? I have never seen any of the snakes I used to breed do this and I am concerned for her health. The male is a hefty four footer and the female is a thinner 3 footer. In spite of the bleeding she appears receptive and alert and basically unphased.

Is there anything I can do? Is she OK?

I am a little frustrated and concerned about this...

Thanks for any insight you can provide.

-Chris Anderson

Not to worry,..this can often happen from time to time, especially when the male is substancially larger than the female. The male's reproductive organs(hemipenes) are very barb-laiden and spiney, and can cause some slight bleeding sometimes. She will be absolutely fine.

The hemipene's below are from a male Southern Hognose.

Thanks Guys! I am glad to hear that. He is rather well endowed. During the first copulation I thought she'd begun to defecate when I noticed that it was actually the part of him that didn't fit! Yikes!!!!

I am now more at ease...

Have a nice night.

poor guy!! Are you kidding.... POOR GIRL!! if my husdand had barbs like that he'd be sleeping on the couch until the end of time.

The reason I said that is,if you notice, they ve been removed! Jeff

That was my thought also. I don't think a human whose organs looked like that would ever get any. The term "running screaming for the hills" comes to mind

At least the boy was, hopefully, dead before the removal.

Sean.

(I am a vet tech) I had a jungle corn who had a hemipene prolapse. We gave him a small dose of anesthesia, tied suture around the base, very similar to the picture, and made one simple cut. He woke up acting just fine. Having it removed had to feel better than having it dragged around on the outside, drying, and being pinched by the vent.

if you think a male snakes reproductive organs are bad, you should see a cats....ouch! of course, there is a reason for it. I'd explain, but this is the wrong forum.

This has been brought up before.
I noticed one of my males made a bloody mess with two different females, last season. So, that led me to believe it is the male. Also, I know that the males hemi-pene enlarges to "lock" with the female. I was wondering if a small blood vessel could have ruptured when the blood is pumped into the hemipene. I actually witnessed a bloody mating this season. I noticed the male was not fully inside the female's vent, and it looked like the blood was seaping from him. Soooo... this supports my opinion. I am no expert, though.
here are pics of the mess from last year, and some poor ones of what I witnessed this year.

Close up

After...you can see all the blood that looks like it is coming from his hemipene

Misty,.....Since every situation is different, and every snake is a unique individual like any other animal, I suppose it could very well be from your male, and not the female, sort of hard to say,.....but as you said, if there's a broken, or thin-walled blood vessel in either hemipenis, it could certainly rupture when engorged with blood at breeding time, in fact, very likely.

I often wonder about how some male snake's will be later in years when probed incorrectly at a younger age. I've seen people use too thin of a probe for the snake they are using it on, and literally push it too far down the inverted hemipene, and rupturing/piercing the animal to whatever degree,...I'm not saying this necessarily pertains to your case here, but I have seen this happen, and I'm sure it happens quite often from novices trying their hand at probing without seeing it done from an experienced person. Also, as you know, a strong snake will MANY times "jerk", or "flinch" when the probe goes down, and unless the snake is firmly held from doing so, they can no doubt get injured that way from jabbing the probe even further into themselves.

Again, I'm talking about many other snake's throughout the hobby that have been forcefully probed incorrectly, not necessarily yours, see what I mean?

In any case, I hope yours continues to do okay. I guess if your male was mated to several other females, and this always happened, I'd certainly begin to think it was definitely him,...either that, or your male is built like "John Holmes", the famous porn star!..LOL!

lol.
That one male had 2 bloody matings last year. Nothing this year and nothing his first year. This year he mated one of the same females from last year as well. He was never probed, either (unless the breeder that I got him from did and I doubt it, since the snake was in a tank with 50 other corns).
The male in the picture, with the bloody mating was from a breeder friend of mine. I just got the snake a few months ago, so I cant vouch for him.

but I agree. Each snake is different. I am sure sometimes its the male, sometimes females.
