about how much does a blood python cost? and what are their growth rates like?
I got my first for $59 at a reptile show. She's a big sweetie and I love her, but she hasn't turned out to have amazing color. If you want one that'll turn out nice and red, you might have to spend $200 .
They seem to reach full adult size and weight around the third year. I only bothered to take actual measurements with my first one, and I never wrote them down, but as I recall:
approx. one year--28-30"
two years--36-40"
three-four years--56"/21lbs.
I've been able to confirm with some lucky straight-line measurements that she actually is 56".
Just as an aside, bloods aren't really as terrible as their reputation suggests
thank you for the info. is it true that different mutations grow to different sizes and if so wich one is the smallest? and wich short tailed python is smallest?
If by mutations you mean morphs, I don't know of any that are generally smaller than any other bloods, but some locales grow to different sizes--I hear Malaysian bloods get larger than Sumatrans, but Malaysians are relatively uncommon in the US. As for which species of short-tailed python is the smallest, I believe Sumatran blacks are smaller than Borneos and red bloods, but I've never had a black so I can't tell you definitively.
thank you for the info. does any body know if borneo blacks have same/similar temperments to bloods? does anybody know wich short tail python/reginol variation has the feistyest disposition?
Borneo's are Borneo's, Blacks are Sumatran short tails. As far as temperment it is all in the individual. Buy captive from a good breeder and you should be ok. More important start reading the care sheets from some of the breeders on here and read them over and over. Bloods are not Ball pythons and require better husbandry, best of luck.
