kcaiman Aug 29, 2003 04:58 PM

i have a small bluetailed monitor that mostly gets fuzzies crickets and mealworms. i want to expand his diet and was wondering if herring or shiners from the local bait shop would be good? i know goldfish are bad for them i just wanted to see what fish are safe to feed to my bluetail

Hi,

Shiners/minnows/molluscs are in the natural diet of V. doreanus. No problems there - the only problem you will most likely experience is that fish is smellier coming out than going in, and you will know straight away entering your home when they have expelled their fish dinner...wash them well, and feed whole if possible, head first always.

Feed a variety of menu items. Only field report on their dietary menu is they eat freshwater crabs, hence the blunt round snout and long teeth for piercing the carapace of such animals.

Good Luck,
mbayless
