Nose Bashing

iggyjade Apr 10, 2008 04:35 PM

My baby girl was a rescue iguana, she is approx. 2-3 years old. Wwhen we got her she had taken some damage to her nose. Her enclosure is 7 ft tall, with 3 walls and 1 thick mesh side. She keeps banging her poor nose on the walls and is really starting to cause damage to it. She is missing teeth and skin it doesn't seem to be healing at all. Any advice?

How wide is the cage? I'm wondering if she has enough room for her length and can she climb up easily enough by use of branches or shelves. Are the walls wood or plexiglass/glass? Where is she located, by a window or in a room by herself? I might consider switching her to another cage altogether. What are her temps?

Treating the nose may require a vet visit. That area is VERY slow to heal. I would keep a triple antibiotic ointment on it daily and make sure she can eat.

are you sure your iguana is rubbing his or her nose ?.. could it be being burned from a hot lamp ? or basking lamp thats to close to the cage ?
my iguana was doing the same thing and i thought she was rubbing her nose but then i realized it was bring burned so i made the light fixture outt of the tank and she stopped doing it.

Yes, take her to the vet and they should give you the proper ointment to help her.

Her Cage is 6ft X 6ft and 8ft tall
There are lost of easy access climbing points
Her lamps are high enough up that she can't reach them
The temp is around 75-80
She has a bath of fresh water in the bottom
3 drywall sides and 1 Mesh wall/door
Cage is in a rarely used room not near any windows

I took her to the vet and he said to use polysporin on the nose, but it won't help if she doesn't stop bashing it

Just a random thought....If you moved her close to a window so she could see some action, maybe that would calm her down a bit. Does she get a bit of time outside of her cage each day?
