Black swallowtail larve as food?

travman Aug 29, 2003 05:06 PM

Has anyone fed a black swallowtail larve to their chameleon? I have easy access to them in my herb garden where they eat parsley. I understand that birds eat them but wanted to know for sure before feeding to my chameleon.

Travis - see my discussion with Waldo (linked below)

I also can never understand why someone would want to feed butterfly caterpillars to their herps - but that's just me

Anyway, my response to his question should help answer yours

Parsely worms

Thanks for the info.
I realize that would be killing future butterflies, but my parsley is limited. I get far more eggs and little larve than what can survive. The parsley (which is planted just for the butterflies!) is stripped clean several times a year by them. So i would not have felt guilty for feeding some of them.

Might I suggest you plant more parsley? Then you AND the swallowtails will have plenty
