Bearded Dragon Rubbing Nose and Clawing one side of cage?

lndspd03 Aug 29, 2003 05:19 PM

My Bearded who is about 1 year old has recently taken to rubbibg his nose and clawing at on side of his cage only. Sometimes standing on his hind legs and other times rubbing his nose side to side. There is no sign of wear on his snout, but I am worried if he continues that he will hurt himself. My cage is 36" long by 18" deep and 18" tall. He measures about 14" tip of nose to end of tail. He has a rock hiding place and a grapevine climbing structure with several levels and branches. What can be done to discourage this behavior? Or, what am I doing wrong to perhaps unwittingly promote it? Any feed back would be appreciated. Thanks for your time.

It seems that your Beardie is adgitated and/or exibiting signs of trying to excape. Animals try to excape when something in their habitat is wrong. I don't know much about beardies, other than different morphs, and such. Make sure the temp is right, you are using the right substrate, and such. Another reason could be that he may want a mate. You should try the Beardie forum, where they know more about Beardies, and could possibly be of more help. Good luck!

Thank you for taking the time to respond. Yesterday I thoroughly cleaned and disenfected his cage and all items in it. I have also removed and replaced all substrate. The temp has been right where it should be. I changed the surroundings around a bit. He exhibited a little of the same behavior but then settled down. It was late in the day and he may have been tired from all the handling, etc. Today will be the true test. Thanks again!

Something else you might want to think about is to make some of the sides a solid color. If they see, instead of clear glass, maybe a big black plane, they usually stop (at least on that side). I've had it work about 4 out of 5 times or so.
