"Treating" cypress mulch

rich_123 Aug 29, 2003 05:32 PM

What is the good way to treat cypress mulch (get rid of all the buggies and stuff)? Many in the past have recommended chemicals but I want to avoid those unless it's absolutely necessary or I have some serious problem. Others recommend baking it, but that only allows for fairly small amounts to be treated (I need enough for 3 enclosures that are 4' by 2'). I've heard one person on another forum recommend placing the mulch in a freezer. Overall, I like this idea the best since it would allow me to treat the greatest amount of mulch with virtually no risk, but I have doubts that this would do the trick. I'm sure in order for it to work, I would have to keep the mulch in the freezer for days and days, maybe even weeks. Has anyone tried this method or have any other recommendations? Thanks to all those who reply.

I just dump it in cages right out of the bag and have never had a problem... maybe I was lucky? I've never seen a bug in it. I have a rainbow boa, a blood python, and a Timor monitor on the stuff.

I just want to get an idea about the quality of the stuff you use. I can only really use the mulch that's at Wal-Mart, or the PX on Ft. Knox. I think the PX would be better quality, but I'm not sure. I guess I'll try both.

I think I want to say I actually got my last bag at a gas station, but it's the same stuff they sell at Walmart.
