how does a snake clean itself

mldolan Apr 11, 2008 10:41 PM

my baby BP had a rough feeding today, ate a mouse rear end first. Took 3 hours and made a considerable mess, lots of mouse goo all over the feeding tank and the snake, snake was pretty exhausted as well. i would under normal circumstances clean him off with a damp towel, but in this case he was just too stressed and needed to get some rest. I don't know if you all do the same after a messy feeding but if not, how would a captive snake clean off the mouse fluids from itself? or in the wild?
thanks
Mike

I am only guessing here, But my assumption would be either swimming or rubbing itself on the ground.

My pet snakes all rub the sides of their faces after eating.

The small ones put in a comic show rubbing and flipping, rubbing some more. it's funny to watch.

My Corn snake heads straight for his water bowl right after he eats.

Wayne

let's not forget also that when they shed their skin it's pretty much a fresh start sort of like putting on a new layer of paint on a car except it comes from beneath... and the old layer peels off

How true!!!!

NOTHING outshines a freshly shed snake.

well mine is a slob, i waited the mandatory two day waiting period while he was curled up in his warm hide before handling him and had to give him a good wiping down with a warm washcloth, he had dried mouse goo all over. bits of hair and other unrecognizable dried stuff. the snake did not appreciate it. but i got him nice and clean. since he just shed i wasn't about to wait 6 weeks for another shed.
