Respitory Disiese and Shed, same time

Rowebert Apr 12, 2008 12:28 AM

I have 2 BP in the same cage. I know I shouldn't, but one of them has a respiratory infection and the other one is in shed. The later has a retained eye cap from the last shed and I don't know how to humidify his skin without making the other sick. I am keeping the cage at 95 deg. for two weeks to dry his lungs out at the advice of a pet store owner. I have a second 10 gal. cage but no heat source. Any suggestions?

erm..... buy another heat source and a vet!

and please tell me the balls aren't adults and they're being housed in a 10 gallon....

You need to cover the screen top of the cage- I use aluminum foil and packing tape- works great.
You need to keep the humidity in teh cage.

as for getting the retained cap off. Soak a pillowcase in warm water, then put the snake inside- tie the bag and leave the snake for an hour or so, then pull the snake out and using the pillow case, gently rub of the eye- it should come right off.

most likely, they both have the URI- its HIGHLY contagious- even snakes housed seperatly but in the same room will catch it from each other.

get them to a vet to get some kind of antibiotic.
Many vets will make payment arrangements with you- so do your animals right and get them to a vet and house them seperatly from now on.

good luck

if you know you shouldn't keep them together, seperate them. Provide them with better husbandry on your part, and I bet the snakes do better. Not trying to be rude, but you described some elementary mistakes and then asked for suggestions to help out. I would recommend you to get one of the may available general care of Ball Python books and do as they say, not as you want. The best advice is if you only have space for one, then keep only one. Best of luck!
