Silicone in a cage?

shion Apr 12, 2008 06:05 PM

I see people talking about caulking their cages, what are they typically using? I have heard someone say silicone but could that be harmful to them?

As long as silicone is fully cured I don't see why it would be a problem. It has quite an odor until it is dried but after that it should be fine.

Depends what type you use. The most safe one is the 100% silicone. I have heard of amphibians having adverse reactions to the silicon II (I think that is the name) because os the mildicides it contains. I have never heard of a blood having a reaction to it, but there's a first for everything.

My tortoise once actually ate some silicone that lined the corners of her cage. Years later, and she's doing great. Now tortoises and snakes obviously have different eating habits, so consuming it isn't the risk there. I don't see how simply being near it would hurt.

I build custom reef aquariums, reptile and parrot habitats and like the previous person said, once it has cured, 100% aquarium silicone is harmless. It needs to be well ventilated, cure for 48 hours and then rinsed dried and rinsed again. All will be well. In all reality... anything that is reef aquarium safe will be reptile safe. Let me know if you have any more specific questions as to the application you are thinking of using it in.
